She picks flowers for me,
arranges them in pretty vases
and puts them on my desk.
There, the fragrance of roses
drifts across the national news
and makes the world less grey.
There, the musk of lavender
that filled my childhood years
conjures an innocent happiness.
There, the bright marigolds
splash golden sunshine
over my dullest labours.
There, one unremitting day
she brought the hedgerow in
and set me city-free.
There, violets, there, mimosa,
there one I do not know – verbena!
and all say Smile, the day is good!
She picks flowers for me
and she has perfumed all my life
and made my studies a sweet garden.
